Scholarships
Each year the Mayfield Village Garden Club awards scholarships to selected high school graduates of the Mayfield City Schools Excel TECC Environmental Education Program who will be pursuing post high school education in a qualified program as designated by the Club.
Arbor Day
Starting in January, the Arbor Day Committee coordinates with Mayfield Village Center School administration in planning an Arbor Day Ceremony which involves Center Elementary School students. There is a tree planting event and an entertaining presentation on what trees need to grow.
Mayfield Village Wetlands Trail Monarch Waystation
In an agreement with Cleveland Metropark’s North Chagrin Nature Center and the city of Mayfield Village, the Club obtained certification for a Monarch Waystation. It is the last stop on the Mayfield Village Wetlands Trail and is planted and maintained to create a pollinator habitat to provide food and shelter for Monarch adults and larva, many other types of butterflies, and bees. The garden is marked by signs showing that it is an approved Monarch Waystation and that the garden is maintained by the Mayfield Village Garden Club.
Mayfield Union Cemetery
The Mayfield Union Cemetery, located on Wilson Mills Road, was established as a Mayfield Township Cemetery in 1843. The Club entered an agreement with the Cemetery Governing Board comprised of members from Highland Heights, Mayfield Heights, and Mayfield Village to maintain the flower beds at the Cemetery. There are two perennial beds at the cemetery entrances as well as two beds of annuals located around the flagpole and the cemetery sign at the front of the cemetery.
Mayfield Village Holiday Wreaths
Every November the Club makes new bows for the artificial wreaths that are hung on the lamp posts in the main village traffic corridor and the doors of the government buildings.
Providence House and Ronald McDonald House Holiday Donation Drive
Members donate new stuffed Teddy Bears, other stuffed animals, and books which are collected at the October and November meetings. The chairperson communicates with the listed charities and takes the items to be distributed to the children at Providence House (Teddy Bears) and Ronald McDonald House (stuffed animals and books).
Stockings for Soldiers
Every fall the chairperson contacts a local business participating in a Stockings for Soldiers program to pick up empty holiday stockings to be stuffed as well as a list of suggested items to include in the stockings. Club members take the empty stockings home to be filled and then returned at the next meeting. The filled stockings are taken back to the participating business far enough in advance so that they can be shipped overseas to active military.
Holden Forests and Gardens Annual Holiday Garden Show
As an affiliate member of Holden Forests and Gardens, the Club members participate in creating a display for the annual holiday show held though the month of December at the Cleveland Botanical Garden.
Valentine Workshop
Every year we contact the local Community on Aging office and coordinate with them on providing valentines for Meals on Wheels recipients.
Flags
Old Flags are collected and given to the Boy Scouts who properly retire the flags by burning during an annual ceremony held at the First Responders Site next to the Mayfield Village Fire Department building on Flag Day.
Plant-A Tree Program (Penny Pines)
National Garden Clubs, Inc. has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to provide funding for reforestation and forest education program through its Plant-A-Tree program. MVGC members generously support this effort collecting donations at meetings. When $50 is collected, the donation is submitted to the Forest Service; the agency reserves the
right to determine where funds are used based on need.
Environmental Awareness and Initiatives
The Garden Club has a robust program and activities related to environmental awareness including lectures, presentations, and site visits. In addition, the Club fosters several ongoing recycling initiatives. The Club also supports the Western Reserve Land Conservancy.
Give & Take
A table is setup at each meeting for members to share items they no longer want, given for free, to anyone who can find a use for the items.
Recycle Corks
Wine corks are being donated by Garden Club members as well as area local restaurants. Wine corks are packaged and sent to non-profit entities that donate to Forest and Ocean Conservation and recycle synthetic corks.
Aluminum Tabs
Aluminum tabs are collected and donated to Ronald McDonald House. The money received for recycling the tabs is used to fund the family hospitality rooms at various local hospitals and to help pay lodging costs for families with children being treated for medical conditions and staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
Eyeglasses
Used eyeglasses are collected and dropped off at a local optometrist office, which in turn are donated to the Cleveland Sight Center. The Sight Center ships them to Ohio State University, where students in Optometry evaluate the glasses to determine their usefulness. The usable eyeglasses are then shipped to Third World countries to be distributed.
Western Reserve Land Conservancy
Every year MVGC donates to Western Reserve Land Conservancy, which works to preserve the scenic beauty, rural character, and natural resources of northern Ohio. It is the largest land trust in Ohio and one of the largest in the nation. The land conservancy, formed in 2006 by the merger of eight land trusts, has preserved more than 920 properties and more than 18,000 acres in its twenty-nine county service region.
